By the year 2011, the Cross Village Rug Works will be a self-sustaining economic engine. We will support our mission with a well-balanced approach to our organization, to include but not be limited to the following areas of particular interest:

We will have a vital Board of Directors, an Executive Director and a Production Director, and will serve as an Employer of Choice in our Northern Michigan communities. Our staff of up to thirty full- and part-time skilled Artisans will be trained according to the high standards set by our Board and staff and have the opportunity to earn a sustainable income by creating hand-crafted textiles for sale through the Cross Village Rug Works.
The historical significance of the Cross Village region, thought by many to be the longest continuously inhabited area in Michigan, will be preserved through educational programming, record conservation, and textile design.

The Cross Village Rug Works will continue to be a vital part of the agricultural community by supporting local fiber farmers and milling manufacturers in Northern Michigan. We will demonstrate our support by continuing to purchase local fleece and utilize regional milling companies and educating community members of the value of our agricultural heritage.

Education will remain a focal point of our mission, and we will have developed partnerships and collaborations with colleges, schools, and organizations in our surrounding area. We will be recognized as the premier center for education and production of fiber arts. Our education and outreach efforts will include workshops for adults and children, field trips to local farms, curriculum for school sessions, and special events.

We will have a professionally designed and managed Internet marketing site for gallery and special order sales of our high quality, handcrafted textiles. These sales, in combination with workshop tuitions, grant and donations will enable the Cross Village Rug Works to become a financially viable and vibrant organization. We will establish the necessary policies and procedures to realize our goal of becoming self-sustaining within three years.

The Mission:
Cross Village Rug Works,
a non-profit organization,
has a three-part mission

Gallery Showroom
Gallery Lounge
To offer sustainable skills through the development of the Cross Village Rug Works, a nonprofit Corporation, in a cottage industry structure providing education and employment, with health insurance benefits, to area residents who fall within the definition of Michigan’s economic poverty level. These Paid Artisan Apprentices and Artisans will create high-quality hand crafted floor coverings expressing the tradition and spirit of this unique area of northern Michigan in a distinctive regionalist style. Apprenticeships will include, but not be limited to, rug braiding, on and off-loom weaving, various tapestry techniques and natural dyeing. Aggressive marketing in a retail gallery where visitors will be able to observe floor coverings being created using a variety of techniques, and through a professionally designed and managed website, will ensure the economic sustainability of the mission and its goals, thereby relieving the chronic and seasonal underemployment suffered by area residents.

To provide ongoing educational opportunities, encouragement and continued growth and skills refinement to Cross Village Rug Works Artisans by offering textile related workshops by qualified instructors for this purpose. To also provide community oriented adult and youth educational programs that embody Modern and Traditional Fiber Arts, including, but not limited to, those historically indigenous to this area. Such programs will be aimed at fostering responsibility and an understanding of the value of utilizing, protecting and preserving the assets of this unique area. These assets include, but will not necessarily be limited to, its natural resources, many of which have historically been used by area residents and remain useful today, both functionally and for creative expression.

To support northern Michigan’s agricultural communities by offering area fiber farms a steady venue through Value Added Agriculture with the purchase and utilization of virgin wool and a variety of luxury fibers produced by local farms. To further these ends by organizing seasonal activities and a variety of community and school programs designed to create public interest and incentive to preserve our agricultural community’s valuable way of life.
